A Seated Torso Twist

Sit on the floor and put your feet flat on the floor by bending your knees. Always keep your feet hip distance apart for proper alignment. Extend your arms straight out in front of you and interlock your fingers while leaning back about 45 degrees. While you are doing this movement, breathe continuously in and out and focus on holding that position. Important part of this is to also concentrate on contracting your abdominal muscles at the same time.


Think about taking your belly button and pulling it backwards towards your spine. Got that? Good. I know it is a lot to think about at once, but with practice, it gets easier. Now, while holding this position, rotate your torso to the right as far as you can but allow your abs to control the movement, not your arms. Keep your fingers locked at all times and your arms straight out. Rotate to a comfortable degree (be careful of your back). Now, rotate your torso as far to the left as you can, comfortably, contract your belly button to the spine and hold. Don't forget to exhale while doing this. There is a definite tendency to hold your breath.



Small, Effective Lifts

With both feet on the floor and your knees bent, take your hands and interlock them behind your head. Lift your chin off of your chest and concentrate on making one smooth movement up towards the ceiling. If you are looking anywhere but at the ceiling, you are not targeted the abdominals. It takes practice, but lift slowly up looking at the ceiling and slowly exhale as you lift your upper torso up towards the ceiling. Now, this time, lift and hold for a smaller count of five. In other words, stay in the lifted position and don't return to the floor. Then do one single lift. Then try doing 10 small pulses to fatigue or until you can't do one more. I guarantee this will burn your abs into shapes and is one of the best abs exercises you can do.
